Plains Bookies read “Devil in the White City” by Eric Larson, copyright February 2004, ISBN 9780375725609.
This one the club rate 4.5 out of a possible 5. It lost a few points for some of us because of the format in which it was written. We all found it very fascinating regarding the historical information. They accomplished alot in just a short period of time. It really was like two books in one. One book is about the architect Daniel Hudson Burnham and what he had to go through to build the 1893 Chicago’s World Fair. The other is the story of a madman and serial killer Henry H. Holmes. Going back and forth between the two subjects I personally found frustrating but well worth reading the book despite this factor. If you are a history buff you will love this book. One of the comments made was if they had written the history books like this in school, high school students might enjoy it more.
When I was reading this book it prompted me to want to find pictures and more information than was in the book. Two of the websites I enjoyed were "Digital Archive of American Architecture" and "The White City".
If you have read this book we would love to get your comments and thoughts about this book or any of our books. We also would like to here what you are reading.
