“The Chase” by Clive Cussler
Well he has done it again. I don’t know if you are a Cussler fan or not but if you haven’t read any of his books this is a must read. Clive is pure entertainment from start to finish. The book opens in the year 1950 with the raising of a locomotive up out of the depths of the Montana Lake. Inside are the remains of 3 people who died 44 years before.
To begin at the beginning we then must travel back in time to 1906.
It is at this point the excitement begins. You have the bad guy who is a bank robbing, cold blooded murderer known as “the Butcher Bandit”, his lovely sister who is no lady and our hero the detective “Bell” from the “Van Dorn Detective Agency”. (A fictional agency that reminds me a lot of the Pinkerton’s)
I would say it comes close to an Indian Jones type action thriller and the name of the book does it justice. As in most of Mr. Cussler’s books vehicles play just as big a starring role. This story has everything from a 1906 Mercedes Simplex runabout, 1906 Rolls Royce Brougham to a 1905 Locomobile. (Ok I had to look that last one up on the internet because I had never heard of it. See picture above. For more interesting facts go to http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/loco.htm)

The chase scenes are a bit unrealistic but hey we are reading this for fun not for reality. Oh and did I mention the Ford model K? Throw in a couple of motorcycles of the time period and of course the locomotives one being “Adeline” a 442 Baldwin Atlantic locomotive. In the middle of all this he manages to throw in a little romance. (Most of his romances however are more of an afterthought.)
If things don’t get exciting enough for you let’s just throw in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
Clive Cussler is a very descriptive writer. I normally don’t like that sort of thing but in his books it is necessary to help transport you back to the time period and lets you see things the way it was.
Give this book a read and let me know what you think.
